Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall (1985-1887) is one of the best known surrealist painters. He was born to a Hasidic family in Vitebsk, part of the former Russian Empire. He received an Orthodox education and as a young boy he studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He immigrated to Paris at a very early stage in his artistic career, and was inspired by artists such as Modigliani, Fernand Leger and others. In the early 1930's, with the rise of the Nazi regime, his works, which already gained recognition in Europe, were banned from mainstream culture and were even presented at the Degenerate Art Exhibition, which was organized by the Nazis to display art they claimed signified all that was "decadent" in modern art at the time. Following this incident, Chagall sharpened his style and focused on his personal life, as well as the suffering of the Jews from anti-Semitism. During World War II he fled from Europe to the United States. In 1949 he returned and settled in Provence, where he lived and painted until his death in 1985. Chagall has a unique cubist style, which relies on the world of fantasy and dreams. Most of his surrealist scenes depict the lives of the Hasidim in the Eastern Europe’s Jewish towns. His distinct talent won him numerous prizes, including the French government’s Legion of Honor (1971), the Wolf Art Prize (1981), and the Worthy Citizen of Jerusalem award (1977). His most famous work, "Chagall Windows" is displayed in the Israel Synagogue at Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.
